Course Structure
International English Language Testing System (IELTS) is an English language proficiency exam that measures the ability of test-takers to communicate in the four basic language skills: listening, reading, writing and speech.
IELTS is managed by three main institutions: the British Council, IDP: IELTS Australia and the University of Cambridge ESOL Examinations (Cambridge ESOL). IELTS is taken by those who intend to study, live, or work in a country where English is the primary language of communication. The following three main categories of people are required to take the test:
-
- Students who intend to study in an English-medium school, college, or university in United States, Canada, United Kingdom, South Africa, Australia, or New Zealand.
- Students who intend to apply for immigration to countries such as Canada, Australia or New Zealand.
- Those who are required to demonstrate their English proficiency to meet the requirements of professional associations or regulatory bodies in various countries.
Since 1989, IELTS has become one of the most recognised testing systems around the world.
Furen International School (FIS) offers the Preparatory Course for International English Language Testing System (IELTS) for academic purposes. Upon completion, students are expected to develop the knowledge and skills of English reading, writing, listening and speaking, enabling them to score well in the IELTS examinations. The IELTS result, as evidence of English language proficiency, is accepted by most Australian, British, Canadian and New Zealand academic institutions, by over 3,000 academic institutions in the United States, and by various professional organisations across the world. An IELTS result or Test Report Form is awarded to all test takers with a score from “band 1” to “band 9”. Each University may set a different threshold requirement. In general, a decent IELTS score (above 6.0) combined with satisfactory Cambridge International Examinations (CIE) A-Level Examination result will help students secure admission into top ranking universities around the world.
Core Modules
IELTS
English Reading has two parts: Academic Reading and General Reading. Students get to choose either one of them for study. The Academic Reading module consists of texts of general interest dealing with issues which are appropriate for and accessible to candidates applying for postgraduate or undergraduate courses. The texts of the General Training Reading module draw on social and training contexts or deal with general interest topics.
English Writing has two parts: Academic Writing and General Writing. Students get to choose either one of them for study. Appropriate responses for the Academic Writing module are short essays or general reports addressed to tutors or to an educated non-specialist audience. The General Writing module trains students to write personal, semi-formal or formal correspondence, or to write on a given topic as part of a simulated class assignment.
English Listening will enable students to understand the context of general language proficiency. The content includes social needs and educational training contexts.
English Speaking is intended to equip students with the necessary knowledge and skills to communicate effectively with native speakers of English.
