Course Structure
The HIGH SCHOOL DIPLOMA – GRADE 10, HSD Grade 10, provides two distinct pathways, based on: the Cambridge International General Certificate of Secondary Education (IGCSE) and Singapore Cambridge GCE ‘O’ level curriculum. Students may choose to take either IGCSE or Singapore Cambridge GCE ‘O’ Level curriculum with the two curricula carried out in separate classes. Upon completion of the Course, we expect students to be equipped with the knowledge and skills to sit for the IGCSE or Singapore Cambridge GCE ‘O’ Level and HSD Grade 10 Examination and be well-prepared for HSD Grade 11 in FlS.
Compulsory Module
English Language
This module aims to enable students to communicate effectively in English. At the end of the course, students are expected to be able to listen, read, write and speak to meet general living needs. They are also expected to speak, write and make presentations in internationally acceptable English for academic purpose.
Core Modules
Mathematics
This module is intended to provide students with fundamental mathematical knowledge and skills. It aims to develop the necessary mathematical concepts and skills for continuous learning in Mathematics and related disciplines, and for applications to the real world. By developing students’ mathematical thinking and problem-solving skills, they are expected to apply these skills to solve problems with logical reasoning and judgement.
Physics
This module will enable students to acquire understanding and knowledge in the area of physical matter and phenomena. By providing a worthwhile educational experience, students are expected to develop the ability and skills that are relevant to the study and practice of science which is useful in everyday life as well as the development of the right attitude to appreciate accuracy, precision, objectivity and integrity.
Chemistry
This module will equip students with sufficient understanding and knowledge in respect of practical chemistry, particularly the appreciation of the finite life of the world’s resources and hence the need for recycling and conservation. Students are expected to show economic consideration and concern about the social, environmental, health and safety issues relating to the chemical industry and to recognize the usefulness and limitations of scientific methods.
Elective Modules
Additional Mathematics
This module aims to equip students with a strong foundation in algebraic manipulation skills and mathematical reasoning skills. Along with Elementary Mathematics, these 2 modules are intended to equip students with the mathematical concepts and skills for continuous learning in Mathematics and related discipline.
Biology
The module is designed to provide an enjoyable and worthwhile educational experience for all learners and enables students to acquire sufficient knowledge and understanding of Biology. Through the learning of various aspects of Biology, including plants and human, students are expected to apply the scientific concepts and theories to present reasoned explanations of familiar and unfamiliar phenomena, to solve complex problems involving several stages, and to make reasoned predictions and hypotheses.
Chinese
This module is designed for learners whose first language is Chinese. The syllabus develops learners’ ability to communicate clearly, accurately, and effectively. They learn how to employ a wide-ranging vocabulary, use correct grammar, spelling and punctuation, and develop a personal style and an awareness of the audience being addressed.
Economics
This module develops an understanding of economic theory, terminology, and principles. Learners study the economics of different countries and how these interrelate. They also learn to work with simple economic data and to use the tools of economic analysis. Learners apply understanding of economics to current economic issues.
Geography
By learning the module, learners will develop a ‘sense of place’ by looking at the world around them on a local, regional and global scale. Learners will examine a range of natural and man-made environments, and study some of the processes which affected their development. They will also look at the ways in which people interact with their environment, and the opportunities and challenges an environment can present, thereby gaining a deeper insight into the different communities and cultures that exist around the world.
Computer Science
This module helps learners develop an interest in computational thinking and an understanding of the principles of problem-solving using computers. They apply this understanding to create computer-based solutions to problems using algorithms and a high-level programming language. Learners also develop a range of technical skills and the ability to effectively test and evaluate computing solutions.
Business Studies
This module develops learners’ understanding of business activity in the public and private sectors, and the importance of innovation and change. Learners find out how the major business organization are established, financed and run, and how their activities are regulated. Factors influencing business decision-making are also considered, as are the essential values of cooperation and interdependence.
Accounting
This module introduces learners to the theory and concepts of accounting and how accounting is used in a variety of modern economic and business contexts. Learners focus on the skills of recording, reporting, presenting and interpreting financial information and build an ideal foundation both for further study and for a future career within the profession.
Literature in Chinese
This module provides opportunities for students to develop their skills and knowledge of Chinese. Through tasks associated with a range of texts and text types, students gain an insight into the culture and language of Chinese-speaking communities through the study of a range of texts. As students progress, they will have a deeper understanding of Chinese languages, cultures, values and ethos as well as develop into critical and creative global thinkers with cross-cultural understanding and awareness.
Information and Communication Technology
This module helps students to develop an understanding of the implications of technology in society and the ways Information and Communication Technology (ICT) can help at home, work and in the wider world. Through practical and theoretical studies, students solve problems using a variety of common software, such as word processors and interactive presentation software. The students will analyze, design, implement, test and evaluate ICT systems, making sure that they are fit for the purpose. There is an emphasis on developing lifelong skills, which are essential across the curriculum and their future career.
